Fall is here and, for some of us, its the start of a battle with seasonal depression. I hate the cold, I hate everything turning brown, but I get better at dealing with it every year and music definitely helps. Here is some music to help you head into the days ahead, whether you celebrate or not.

11 Songs from five artists (missing "GREY" from RØRY)

FIGHTMASTER

I feel like I orbited around E.R. Fightmaster for a while but didn't cross paths until earlier this year with "Quicksand" from the new album "Tolerance" followed by their appearance on Catherine McCafferty's show. More of a rock and R&B mix than pop and definitely more "grown up" than my usual taste in music, but I will definitely be checking out the rest of their music this year.

Lights

I have followed Lights for a long time but just got around to listening to her 2025 album "A6". The chorus for "Alive Again" comes in with "This. Might. Be. The Night That. I. Die." and I love it so much. Lights has also worked with several other artists including BMTH, Tegan & Sarah, and EDM artists (one of which I featured here). My other favorite (from the extended version of A6) that I've included is "Come Get Your Girl".

IVES

Since we are deviating from my usual girlypop fair so far in this article, lets talk about new-to-me artist IVES. Self-described as "Heavy Pop", her music reminds me most of what I like to think of as "Operatic post-hardcore" without the angsty, whiny, 80lb male lead singer. I've included the fantastic "GTFO" and "Keeping Score" on this playlist.

RØRY

What could be better for battling winter than music from someone who didn't let life's pitfalls get the better of them and turned their experience and struggles into epic, melodic rock? My intro to RØRY was "Degradation" which is probably one of the most perfect blends of all the things I like in heavier music. She re-appeared on my radar this month with "STRANGE" from her latest album "BLOODLETTING". We will check out the rest of the album together because I haven't had a chance to listen to it all yet!

Bruvvy

Rounding out this post is an an artist my partner found recently and really likes. Bruvvy have release three singles "Little Shiva", "Devour", and "Holiday" this year. They remind me of the TV show Misfits and its theme song by The Rapture which is a reference I think my partner will also appreciate. My favorite of the three is "Holiday" which grabs you and thrashes you around for three minutes.

We Did It Grrrl!

Hopefully those of us that struggle with the summer ending can find more and more ways to cope and turn winter into a time to grow and find other ways to enjoy life. I know if I didn't have music and really bright lights I wouldn't make it!💜
